Morning Rush Empty Re: Morning Rush

Post  Admin Sun Jan 01, 2012 2:02 am

IT'S been an exceptional year for local bands striving to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Coldplay, Muse and Joss Stone and become the next big name to come out of Devon.

Aiming to keep that momentum going and achieve more success are 2012 is The Computers, Morning Rush, Electric Skies, N.U.MB, Sweet Black Angels and The Morellas to name just a few.

Already no strangers to hearing their songs played on Radio 1, or being booked to perform at major music festivals, is Exeter-based band The Computers.

Since forming three years ago, the band have quickly established themselves as one of the hotly-tipped groups to watch out for. This year's highlights have included releasing the first song from their debut album, performing for the second time at the Reading and Leeds festivals, supporting rock trio The Subways and embarking on their own tour.

Perhaps one of their most unexpected achievements was beating Coldplay and Muse to win the Best Indie and Best Act of 2011 in the first South West Music Awards held in Exeter. In December they also picked up the Best New Band award at The Artrocker awards where they were rubbing shoulders with Gary Numan, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Tim Burgess.

Singer and guitarist Alex Kershaw, of Stoke Hill, said: "I describe our music as weirdo rock: it's a bit like demented Little Richard. We're influenced by all the best stuff from the '50s, '60s, and '70s, including Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis and more modern stuff like Rocket From The Crypt. We have our own genre we're trying to make up of garage, soul, punk'n'roll."

Highly-rated Exeter band Morning Rush released their new EP at the city's Cavern Club last week.

They are also due to be working with iconic songwriter Ray Davies, the former Kinks frontman, at his London studio on some new material. The band write all their own songs and have sold more than 300 copies of their first CD Racetrack.

During the 18 months they've been together Morning Rush have performed at venues across the region and have supported Show of Hands, Billy Bragg and Electric Skies.

One of the city's biggest gigs of the year was the first Crealy Rocks concert in August with headliner Peter Andre. Among the support acts performing in front of thousands was Electric Skies. This year the four-piece from Exeter, originally known as Letters to Leaders, have been busy plugging their debut album recorded in 2010.

Also sharing the bill was Exeter five-piece band N.U.M.B who describe their music as "British fusion" where all music styles they like are wrapped up in strong melodies, beats, and really fast raps.

N.U.M.B, which stands for Never Underestimate Musical Belief, formed in 2007, and have received much critical acclaim ever since. They have played on the same bill as The Magic Numbers and Mica Paris.

Just starting out in the music business is Exeter band The Jesse Dansons, already being acclaimed as one of the UK's most individual live acts. The the talented quartet made it through to the Open Mic UK Regional Finals and they have been shortlisted to carry the Olympic Torch for Coca-Cola in the upcoming 2012 Olympics.

There is also strong talent emerging on the solo scene. Teenager Alex Gregory was a finalist in the Exeter FM Battle of the Bands Charity Competition in 2010 and spends all her spare time singing, playing guitar and writing music.

The 15-year-old, from St Leonard's, Exeter, is already gigging at local venues and describes her developing style as "acoustic pop". Achievements in 2011 include being one of the four final winners of the Breakthrough Music Project organised by the Sound Gallery at the Phoenix, and performing at the Exmouth Festival Finale concert in front of an audience of more than 2,000 people.

It has also been an eventful year for acoustic singer-songwriter Ellie Williams from Exeter who was back performing live this autumn less than six months after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

In October she took her first big step towards rebuilding her career when she performed four songs live on the John Govier show on BBC Radio Devon.

Ellie is currently composing songs for her comeback CD.
