New supergroup and theres definitely no place for Keef
For the past two years it has been the most closely guarded secret in the music business.
But The Mail on Sunday has been given exclusive access to the biggest supergroup in history, combining the talents of five of the biggest stars.
SuperHeavy is a collaboration between Rolling Stones legend Sir Mick Jagger, singer Joss Stone, former Eurythmics musician Dave Stewart, reggae legend Bob Marley’s son Damian and Oscar-winning soundtrack writer AR Rahman.
Their eponymous debut album will be released later this month.
Speaking for the first time about their project in The Mail on Sunday’s Live magazine, the group told how they had to rehearse across four continents, used codenames to rent hotel rooms and studio space and even borrowed the superyacht of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen to guarantee the secret would not leak out.
Stewart, 59, said: ‘It was essential to keep it secret. We had a codename for recording studios – DD Jam . . . We recorded all over the place: LA, Jamaica, Turkey, Italy, Greece, India, Miami . . . Mick would check in under names like Mr Gibson 3.3 – very Ocean’s Eleven.’
Jagger, 68, said: ‘I never found it that hard. I was worried about Dave because he often blabs when he’s talking . . . But if you want to keep things private you can. Fake names in recording sessions, keep it simple.
agger has known Dave Stewart for 25 years and Joss has toured with the Rolling Stones. He knew Damian’s father Bob Marley and was introduced to AR Rahman by Stewart.
However, Jagger has an ongoing feud with fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards, fuelled when Richards described him as ‘unbearable’ in his autobiography and confessed to sleeping with his then girlfriend, Marianne Faithfull.
It means Jagger dismisses the idea of a 50th anniversary Stones tour next year but he hasn’t ruled out a one-off gig at the scene of their first performance – London’s Marquee Club.
He said: ‘There isn’t [a tour] so far. But there might be anything, anything can happen . . . Maybe we could go back to the Marquee to accept a plaque for 50 years of service. That could work – except Keith can’t obviously come
